Upper or Lower Case Sensitive Company Names

Case Sensitive Letters in Company Names

Does the case in which a company name is incorporated make a difference?

The short answer is No. The case a company name is displayed on the incorporation application has no effect, either on the processing of the formation or on the letter case shown on the certificate of incorporation when the registration is complete.

Companies House will, as a strict rule, automatically capitalise all letters in a company’s name regardless of how that name was displayed on the company formation application.

Uppercase Case Company Name

The certificate of incorporation will always display a company’s name entirely in upper case letters. This includes the words Limited or LTD, whichever one was chosen.

The company can however display its name on its stationery, business cards, website and so on however it wishes. That is, it may use all, some or no uppercase letters and also choose which individual letters are presented in which case.

For example, Blue Bear Limited could be displayed as:
BLUE BEAR LIMITED, blue bear limited, bLuE bEaR lImItEd, BLUE bear LIMITED and so on.

Upper and Lower Case for the Same Company Name

Because Companies House regards all company names as being in uppercase letters, it is not possible to claim that a name is not similar to that of an existing company simply because it is submitted using a different case to the one which is already registered.
